Whose view? From where? — July 2008

No entries were received for last month's photo, perhaps because the people best able to answer were too busy biking and paddling to write in.

The photo was of the start of FMR's Great River Energy Mississippi River Challenge at Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park. This part of the Park, run as part of the Three Rivers Park District, is actually one of two major riverfront parks in Brooklyn Park. In addition to hiking and biking trails that connect with destinations elsewhere along the River, Coon Rapids Dam Park offers plenty of spaces for hiking, fishing, open fields for volleyball and other active recreation, along with an interpretive center staffed most of the summer.

And gratefully, unlike the photo, the event this year was a largely sunny affair. The event attracted about 450 paddlers, bicyclists and volunteers raised almost $80,000 in the Challenge. Congratulations to Challenge participants, donors and volunteers!

About Whose view? From where?

Each month in this section, we feature a photo somewhere along the river corridor in the Twin Cities that is in some way significant or important or just plain scenic. Individuals may then e-mail us and identify the view and explain why they believe it is significant to the community or important to them personally. Well publish some of your responses in the next issue of Mississippi Messages, where we will also reveal the correct answer.

To submit your guess and response, e-mail Bob Spaulding, River Advocate, through our contact form. The respondent to provide the first correct identification of the view and hopefully some interesting thoughts about its significance will receive a valuable prize for their effort. All entries must be received by the first day of the following month for consideration.
