Whose view? From where? — January 2009

We got several correct responses to the January photo, so why not let the responders speak for themselves?

This is taken from the Crosby Nature Area in Saint Paul. On the other side of the Mississippi River are the apartments-condo along Highway 13 in the Lilydale/Mendota Heights area. From where the photo is taken, I can see how much of the shoreline (on the Crosby side) has eroded! I've been walking/cross-country skiing down there for many years. In the 1950s, my and Dad and I would explore the area - he just knew there was a lake down there off of W. 7th St.! There were no trails - just an old farmhouse/corn field on the east end of the park (near 35E bridge) and a lot of dense trees on the north & west end...but we did find the "hidden lake!"

I believe the January photo is just downstream from Fort Snelling, just past Pike Island and the confluence with the Minnesota River.

The view is of the Lilydale bluff from Crosby Park in Saint Paul. The viewing spot is a great place to get close to the river and see river recreation and also view activity on Pikes Island. This part of Lillydale was one of the examples used in the Mississippi Critical area designation for the need for bluff setbacks to preserve natural views from the river.

The mystery photo is of Crosby Farm Park in Saint Paul. The area in question is within a plantation of red pines, an odd species choice to plant in floodplain forest. The severe erosion of the river bank beneath them shows their inferiority to more appropriate species such as silver maple, cottonwood, or black willow.

About Whose view? From where?

Each month in this section, we feature a photo somewhere along the river corridor in the Twin Cities that is in some way significant or important or just plain scenic. Individuals may then e-mail us and identify the view and explain why they believe it is significant to the community or important to them personally. Well publish some of your responses in the next issue of Mississippi Messages, where we will also reveal the correct answer.

To submit your guess and response, e-mail Bob Spaulding, River Advocate, through our contact form. The respondent to provide the first correct identification of the view and hopefully some interesting thoughts about its significance will receive a valuable prize for their effort. All entries must be received by the first day of the following month for consideration.
