Whose view? From where? — March 2010

This month we had four correct guesses. Take it away, contestants!

Ryan Rodgers was the first to correctly guess the location:

This photo shows the elevated deck on the west side of the river just below the Coon Rapids Dam. This is a decent place to catch carp if you have some heavy test line to heft the fish from the river. Growing up in Anoka, before my buddy and I had drivers licenses, once a week or so in the summer we'd bike to the dam with our fishing poles and catch carp because they're big, plentiful and bite on almost anything. Not far downstream from this spot are a few islands that by late summer, if the river is low enough, are reachable by wading and fun places to explore.

John Levenwick noted:

March's photo is the west side of the Coon Rapids Dam, on the downstream side of the dam. The put-in for [FMRs Mississippi River] Challenge is just downstream.

Debbie Hartmann wrote:

This photo has to be the view from standing on the Dam bridge over the Mississippi River at the Coon Rapids Dam. Coon Rapids is my original hometown and I grew up riding my bike across this bridge to get to Elm Creek Park Reserve. I still go to the Coon Rapids Dam quite often to hike and bike and my favorite of all — the beginning of the Mississippi River Challenge!

And of course, from our perspective, the Mississippi River Challenge is certainly one of the most important things about the site. As if to emphasize that point, former FMR staffer Sara Muchowski offered the following:

It's the Coon Rapids Dam! Start of the Mississippi River Challenge! WOOT!

Woot indeed, to all of you who correctly guessed this months answer!

About Whose view? From where?

Each month in this section, we feature a photo somewhere along the river corridor in the Twin Cities that is in some way significant or important or just plain scenic. Individuals may then e-mail us and identify the view and explain why they believe it is significant to the community or important to them personally. Well publish some of your responses in the next issue of Mississippi Messages, where we will also reveal the correct answer.

To submit your guess and response, e-mail Bob Spaulding, River Advocate, through our contact form. The respondent to provide the first correct identification of the view and hopefully some interesting thoughts about its significance will receive a valuable prize for their effort. All entries must be received by the first day of the following month for consideration.
