Whose view? From where? — August 2013

Well, Bob Spaulding went easy on folks with his last entry, so expect to see some more challenging photos in the next few months!

Dan Gjelten was the first to respond, writing: That's the long climb from the river up the bank to East River Road, right next to the Franklin Avenue Bridge. It's a great workout for anyone who wants to get their heart rate up and I occasionally see athletes running repeats on those stairs. My dog and I take them two at a time, ourselves.

Helen Torrens added some interesting history with her note: That is the east side of the river, south of Franklin, I believe where Minneapolis Neighborhood Revitalization Program (NRP) money was used to clean up the area and make it safer and more easily accessible.

James Schoettler added his two cents on the energy needed to climb the stairs. That must be the stairway along East Mississippi River Blvd, just south of the Franklin Ave Bridge. I can verify that its easier going down than up, but it saves a long walk either north or south to get up the bluff.

Martin Schub and Eric Otterness also submitted correct responses.

Editors note: Technically speaking, the stairs are along East River Parkway, not Mississippi River Boulevard. The name of the street changes at the Minneapolis-Saint Paul border, just a few blocks south of this site.

Happy Trails!

About Whose view? From where?

Each month in this section, we feature a photo somewhere along the river corridor in the Twin Cities that is in some way significant or important or just plain scenic. Individuals may then e-mail us and identify the view and explain why they believe it is significant to the community or important to them personally. Well publish some of your responses in the next issue of Mississippi Messages, where we will also reveal the correct answer.

To submit your guess and response, e-mail Bob Spaulding, River Advocate, through our contact form. The respondent to provide the first correct identification of the view and hopefully some interesting thoughts about its significance will receive a valuable prize for their effort. All entries must be received by the first day of the following month for consideration.
