Whose view? From where? — January 2014

We had several correct responses for this view from the Pine Bend Bluffs Scientific & Natural Area in Inver Grove Heights. Here are some of the responses:

Beth Brown writes, I just saw the ‘Whose view? From where? picture in this month's Mississippi Messages and have a guess about its location: it seems to resemble the view from the Pine Bend Bluffs SNA near Hastings. To me, that scene captures some of the most beautiful aspects of the Mississippi - the topographical intrigue of the river valley, its sprawling course, and its context in the larger M.R. watershed. I can't be sure that this picture captures the same view, as I have only ever been to the PBB in the fall (after an FMR volunteer event) when it looked quite different... but it seems familiar, at least!

Tom Bell offered a few more specifics: I think the photo was taken from the Inver Grove Hts. side of the river, probably from the SNA. It overlooks the sharp bend in the main channel around the islands separating the channel from Baldwin Lake and the islands separating the channel from Spring Lake on the right side. Lower Grey Cloud Island can be seen in the distance. A very significant portion of the river especially for the long barge units. A heavily industrialized section of the river.

FMR helped to permanently protect this very special place with 256 acres of high quality wildlife habitat and some of the most stunning views in the corridor. Learn more about FMRs work to restore the Pine Bend Bluffs by visiting the pages below.

About Whose view? From where?

Each month in this section, we feature a photo somewhere along the river corridor in the Twin Cities that is in some way significant or important or just plain scenic. Individuals may then e-mail us and identify the view and explain why they believe it is significant to the community or important to them personally. Well publish some of your responses in the next issue of Mississippi Messages, where we will also reveal the correct answer.

To submit your guess and response, e-mail Irene Jones, River Corridor Program Director, through our contact form. The respondent to provide the first correct identification of the view and hopefully some interesting thoughts about its significance will receive a valuable prize for their effort. All entries must be received by the first day of the following month for consideration.
