Whose view? From where? — April 2014

We received more responses than usual this month, possibly because there are a number of landmarks in the photo. Taken from Kellogg Mall Park near the Wabasha Bridge, this photo of Saint Pauls West Side Flats and surrounding panoramic valley includes several well-known places, which our respondents identified correctly – Robert Street Bridge, Raspberry Island Bandshell, Shepard Road, Daytons Bluff and the Comcast Building.

However, the focus of this monthly puzzle is Whose View? From Where? and only two people correctly identified WHERE the photo was taken from. The incorrect responses where not too far off the mark: Shepard Rd, the Science Museum and the High Bridge.

Frank Bowden gave a very accurate and descriptive answer:

This is a view of the Mississippi River from the overlook on the downtown St. Paul end of the Wabasha Bridge. We can see the bandshell on Raspberry Island; it looks like half of the rim of an automobile wheel. Behind it we see the arches of the Robert Street Bridge with Dayton's Bluff on the left horizon.

Dot Drake provided an educated guess that nailed the location:

I think this is the Robert Street Bridge. The photo must have been taken from the Kellogg Boulevard Plaza, or possibly the Wabasha Bridge. (Don't get around much anymore.)

Several people pointed out how great the area is for biking, walking and picnicking!

FMR is working with the National Park Service, local residents and other stakeholders to protect this amazing view as the City of Saint Paul updates its West Side Flats Master Plan.

About Whose view? From where?

Each month in this section, we feature a photo somewhere along the river corridor in the Twin Cities that is in some way significant or important or just plain scenic. Individuals may then e-mail us and identify the view and explain why they believe it is significant to the community or important to them personally. Well publish some of your responses in the next issue of Mississippi Messages, where we will also reveal the correct answer.

To submit your guess and response, e-mail Irene Jones, River Corridor Program Director, through our contact form.
