Whose view? From where? — August 2014

We received quite a few responses this month, but only a few were able to guess the correct location of the photo. Taken from Raspberry Island in 1891, the Wabasha Street bridge along with the Minnesota Boat Club can be seen in the background of a group of curlers about to go out on the river.

Many were able to identify the shot being on the river, however incorrect responses yielded the bridge as the High Bridge/Smith Ave Bridge and the Robert Street Bridge.

Congratulations to Matthew Loyas for not only correctly guessing the location, but also the correct year.

Matthew Pahs and Bruce Kessel were also correct in their guesses, by correctly identifying the landmarks. Bruce also gave us a bit of a history lesson, by reminding us that for a time, Raspberry Island was known as Navy Island, when the United States Navy used the island from 1949-1968.

As we begin to reach the end of our summer months, its fun to remember why we love Minnesota in the winter. Curling, one of our great pastimes, along with a number of other winter activities on the Mississippi River, can be a great way to stay active and enjoy the hibernation months of the Mighty Mississippi. Plan an outing to explore the ice caves, go for a walk along the shore of our stretch of the Mississippi, or even brave the elements and join the Minnesota Ice Busters water skiing club for a winter dip!

About Whose view? From where?

Each month in this section, we feature a photo somewhere along the river corridor in the Twin Cities that is in some way significant or important or just plain scenic. Individuals may then e-mail us and identify the view and explain why they believe it is significant to the community or important to them personally. Well publish some of your responses in the next issue of Mississippi Messages, where we will also reveal the correct answer.
