Whose view? From where? — February 2015

We got several correct responses this month, but only one person correctly identified WHEN the photo was taken, as well as from where. Jonathan Riehle wrote: Hi! This looks like a view of the Mississippi River, looking upstream from the Wabasha Bridge. It appears to be a few years old because the smokestack from the old NSP/Excel Energy generating plant is still there. That stack was demolished a few years ago. I happened to be on Harriet Island at the time and saw it go down. Very exciting stuff!

The photo was taken in 2007 by John Anfinson of the National Park Service and it was used in an effort to name the Valley of Saint Paul as one of Minnesotas 10 most endangered cultural landscapes. Protecting this iconic view continues to be a important goal for MNRRA, FMR and the local community, and is included in the new West Side Flats Master Plan that was recently approved by the St. Paul Planning Commission.

About Whose view? From where?

Each month in this section, we feature a photo somewhere along the river corridor in the Twin Cities that is in some way significant or important or just plain scenic. Individuals may then email us and identify the view and explain why they believe it is significant to the community or important to them personally. We'll publish some of your responses in the next issue of Mississippi Messages, where we will also reveal the correct answer.
