Working to protect the Mississippi River and its watershed in the Twin Cities area

Summer 2008 Events Assistant Intern needed

Friends of the Mississippi River (FMR) is currently seeking applicants for a summer events assistant internship. It is unpaid but offers a high-quality, fun experience in a professional yet camaraderie-filled environment, and is an excellent experience and résumé-builder.

Throughout the summer, beginning in mid-June, FMR holds dozens of restoration and educational events. Most are two to three hours in length, offered weekday evenings or weekend mornings, and are free and open to the public. They range from rain garden workshops to seed collection trainings and gatherings; the schedule is available under Events & Activities. (Events are posted as they are set, to get an idea of last year’s full summer schedule, visit the Past Events listings.)

The events intern would:

  • Assist with promotion and outreach for the events (such as researching and contacting groups that may be interested in attending),
  • Help assemble educational materials for event participants,
  • Assist with event logistics and planning as needed, and
  • Assist at the events themselves with registration, general event management and other tasks as needed.

The minimum commitment would be eight hours a week, but 12 hours per week is preferred to offer the most well-rounded experience of both office and field work. The schedule is flexible, other than the events (most of which the intern will need to attend). We are happy to schedule around vacations and previous commitments. Additional hours can also be arranged.

The intern must be:

  • Reliable,
  • Honest and mature in communications,
  • Comfortable working in an office setting (office provided) at least one day a week,
  • Have some college-level or above experience,
  • Sincere in their desire to work for the health and welfare of the Mighty Mississippi and the special places along it, whether this means planting trees in a tributary or assisting with important data entry or other such work from one’s cubicle.

If you are interested, please e-mail a brief message about why this internship is a good fit for you to Volunteer Coordinator sue rich at srich@fmr.org. Please attach your résumé (informal is fine) as well as two references (phone and e-mail please) including, if possible, a previous employer.
