Friends of the Mississippi River and Macalester Public Interest Group have teamed up for MPIRG’s annual spring clean-up!
The clean-up will take place along Mississippi River Boulevard North, from the railroad bridge near Saint Anthony Avenue to Marshall Avenue (a.k.a. Lake Street on the Minneapolis side). Volunteers can walk along the trails or gently venture off-trail or along the shoreline at their own comfort level. Families and groups are welcome!
Volunteers will meet near the intersection of Southeast Emerald Street and East River Parkway between 10 and 10:15 a.m. to sign in and pick up bags and gloves. If you have small children, you may want to bring kid-sized gloves.
This intersection is located near the eastern bank of the Mississippi River, between the Franklin and Marshall/Lake Street bridges. (Technically, this meeting spot is in Minneapolis, hence the "East River Parkway" designation; this same road is known as "Mississippi River Boulevard North" as you head south into Saint Paul.)
Despite the Saint Paul-to-Minneapolis name changes, the meeting spot is easy to find and parking is readily available on River Terrace East, which parallels the parkway and is very close to this intersection.
Those interested in biking may want to meet Macalester students outside the campus center, near Grand & Snelling, a few minutes before 10 a.m. to cycle, en masse, to the clean-up area. Campus map.
Volunteers should wear sturdy shoes and, of course, expect to get dirty. MPIRG may provide some snacks, but participants are encouraged to bring food and beverages or water bottles to relax and enjoy after the clean-up. Unfortunately, there are no bathrooms in this area.
