On this FMR-guided trip, paddlers travel six miles through the only true gorge on the Mississippi River and experience an urban wilderness at the peak of fall foliage colors. Along the way, FMR staff and the National Park Service rangers will provide interpretation of the history, ecology and management of the river.
Space is limited and pre-registration and payment required; early
registration highly encouraged. (See below for registration and fee
details.)
More about the paddle:
- The paddle begins at East River Flats, near the University of Minnesota
Minneapolis East Bank campus, passes through the Ford lock, and ends at
Hidden Falls Regional Park in St. Paul.
- Shuttle service is provided to all paddlers and safety captains will be present.
- A limited number of rental canoes are available.* Rented canoes typically have space for two adults and two children. Adult-size PFDs and two paddles are included in canoe rental;
however, children in rented canoes must have their own PFD.
- Need a paddling partner and a boat? A limited number of single-person registration spots are available for a half-rental charge.
- All participants must wear a PFD (Personal Flotation Device).
*If you need to rent a boat:
Only a few are left. Please leave a message at 651-222-2193 x31 to make sure one is still available before paying/registering online. Canoe calls will be returned Mondays and Wednesdays. Upon confirmation, complete registration as outlined below.

- Registrations are being taken via FMR's online donation page; Visa, MasterCard and Discover welcome.
Please select "Gorge Paddle registration" in the dropdown menu and enter the appropriate amount.
Fees are:
- $25 registration per adult,
- $15 per child (under 16 and welcome with a parent or guardian),
- $20 for full canoe rental,* and
- $10 for
individuals needing to rent "half a canoe."*
In the "Gift Details" section, please indicate: the number of adults
and children in your party and whether you are purchasing a canoe
rental.
We regret that if we are forced on the day of the event to cancel due to situations beyond our control (lightning, flooding, severe weather, etc.) we will not be able to refund participation fees. They can be applied to memberships and considered an FMR donation.
- You will be taken to a secure credit card processing registration form (more on security). Please make sure to enter your email address on this page so we may send you details and directions.
- Once your credit card is processed, you will receive an email confirmation of payment which also serves as your registration confirmation.
- You will then receive event details and directions via email on the following Monday or Wednesday.
