---------------

Indian Mounds Park is home to one of the most photographed river views in the metro area. The iconic overlook is also home to an exciting habitat restoration project providing much-needed urban habitat while protecting the bluff, its views and local water quality.

FMR volunteers — students from nearby Harding High Earth Club, community members (including Friends of Mounds Park) and individuals and families from throughout the metro area — have been restoring the native bluff prairie on historic Indian Mounds Park's overlook since 2011.

Volunteers are now needed to work with FMR Stewardship Events Coordinator Adam Flett and staff from Saint Paul Parks & Recreation to tend to native prairie plants installed by other Indian Mounds Park stewards in 2014. By removing invasive species and assisting with other tending tasks, volunteers will help the young plants make it through the summer. Thanks to their deep roots, the prairie plants help anchor the steep bluff soil and filter pollutants, such as oil and lawn chemicals, carried to the bluff by stormwater. They will also provide important bee, butterfly and bird habitat. (As opposed to the invasives species volunteers will be removing, such as burdock, which is deadly for bats and small birds.)

Tools, gloves and water will be provided. Please wear sturdy shoes and be prepared to work on steep and uneven terrain. While most FMR activities are family friendly, due to the tools and terrain this particular event is not suitable for small children.
