Whose view? From where? — August 2011

For the August view, the "from where" part of this feature was part of the uniqueness.

Katrina Styx, a reporter for the Hastings Star Gazette, got it right: ?"That's the Hastings High Bridge, taken from a train car traveling over the railroad bridge!"

Brian Huberty, FMR member and volunteer, got one step more specific: ?"This one is easy... [It's the view] from the Amtrak Empire Builder lounge car on the CP railroad bridge looking at the Hwy. 62 bridge to the west."

... And more specific still, FMR volunteer and member Dot Drake notes: ?"It looks like a view of the new[er] Hastings Bridge from the Empire Builder train. I was lucky enough to ride over the Spiral Bridge just before it was demolished. There is a lovely park just over the bridge and a small lake — Lake Rebecca. Also, Lock and Dam Number Two, I believe, is on the northeast side of the bridge."

As many of you know, the bridge that replaced the spiral bridge in the 1950s is now being replaced as well. (This FMR article includes a rendering of the tied-arch bridge currently under construction at this site.)

p.s. If you haven't taken Amtrak's Empire Builder toward Chicago along the Mississippi from St. Paul to LaCrosse, the fall colors make a perfect excuse to book a trip! I highly recommend it.

About Whose view? From where?

Each month in this section, we feature a photo somewhere along the river corridor in the Twin Cities that is in some way significant or important or just plain scenic. Individuals may then e-mail us and identify the view and explain why they believe it is significant to the community or important to them personally. Well publish some of your responses in the next issue of Mississippi Messages, where we will also reveal the correct answer.

To submit your guess and response, e-mail Bob Spaulding, River Advocate, through our contact form. The respondent to provide the first correct identification of the view and hopefully some interesting thoughts about its significance will receive a valuable prize for their effort. All entries must be received by the first day of the following month for consideration.
