Whose view? From where? — December 2010

December's picture received more submissions than any yet. Thanks for your participation!

John Rihle: "This appears to be taken from the public observation area of Lock and Dam No. 1, just downstream from the Ford Parkway/46th Street bridge. The photographer is looking upstream (and down) to take this picture."

Gary Fifield: "This is the Ford Bridge from Lock and Dam No. 1 -- significant for the community because it is No. 1, helped power the Ford plant, and has a peregrine falcon nesting box. For me it's significant because I ride my bike by there frequently and have used the hill from the road to the lock level in the past for training."

Eric Otterness: "This is Ford Lock and Dam No. 1 looking upstream from the observation deck. The bridge is Ford Parkway. The barge is going downstream as it is empty and the towboat beside it pointed downstream. This is a sand and gravel barge going back to Grey Cloud Island for more."

Eric Hart: "I would say that this photo was taken at Lock and Dam No. 1's observation point, looking north to the Ford Bridge and the Minneapolis riverbank. I've paddled underneath that bridge so recognized it from below!"

Jill Danner and Dan Ray also correctly identified the December view!

About Whose view? From where?

Each month in this section, we feature a photo somewhere along the river corridor in the Twin Cities that is in some way significant or important or just plain scenic. Individuals may then e-mail us and identify the view and explain why they believe it is significant to the community or important to them personally. Well publish some of your responses in the next issue of Mississippi Messages, where we will also reveal the correct answer.

To submit your guess and response, e-mail Bob Spaulding, River Advocate, through our contact form. The respondent to provide the first correct identification of the view and hopefully some interesting thoughts about its significance will receive a valuable prize for their effort. All entries must be received by the first day of the following month for consideration.
