Interested in learning more about the Mississippi River Gorge and how this beautiful wonder was formed through the heart of the Twin Cities? On Saturday, May 10th from 10:00 to 11:30 p.m., Friends of the Mississippi River Gorge Stewards will host a Geology Walk-and-Talk through the river gorge in the Seward neighborhood of Minneapolis.
Formed by the receding waters of Saint Anthony Falls, the Mississippi River Gorge is the only true gorge along the entire length of the Mississippi River. Roughly 10,000 years ago, the falls were located downstream where downtown St. Paul is today. Over time the lowest rock layers eroded causing the top layers to crumble and send the falls slowly retreating up river. The result: a narrow gorge with limestone cliffs bordering both sides of the river and home for a diversity of wildlife and plant communities.
