Help restore a protected floodplain forest and shrubland along the Vermillion River, an important tributary to the Mississippi River and the only trophy trout stream close to a metropolitan area in the nation.
Buckthorn and certain honeysuckle are exotic species rapidly taking over this otherwise high-quality site. If allowed to choke out native plants, there would be neither habitat for birds, as buckthorn berries act as a severe laxative while also outcompeting other potential food sources or nesting sites, or trophy trout. The Vermillion would suffer from increased sediment and runoff, as these exotics do not filter pollution nearly as well as native shrubs and plants — meaning more polluted waters and reduced trout habitat.
Professional restoration crews will cut the buckthorn and honeysuckle days beforehand. On October 24th, volunteers are needed to work alongside Friends of the Mississippi River staff to haul and stack this pre-cut brush. With your help — we can restore the ecological integrity in this important area.
This event is part of the Vermillion Stewards program, engaging people in hands-on stewardship and educational programs throughout the unique Vermillion River watershed.
