Working to protect the Mississippi River and its watershed in the Twin Cities area
Help pick up litter along the Vermillion River and its tributaries during the low water levels of autumn, helping to beautify this trophy trout stream!
Volunteers will work simultaneously in three locations throughout the watershed: Whispering Creek in Elko New Market, CP Adams Park in Hastings and South Creek in Lakeville.
About this location: South Creek is a Vermillion River tributary located in Lakeville. Volunteers are needed to walk with FMR staff to pick up trash (and there's plenty of it) in a section of the creek that has been remeandered -- i.e. returned to its natural wending form to improve stream and thus watershed health. This stretch also features now-thriving native plants and shrubs planted by FMR volunteers to further improve watershed quality and wildlife habitat.
After receiving garbage bags and gloves, volunteers will walk and collect litter and other debris that has accumulated along the river and floodplain over the summer months. All supplies are provided and FMR staff will be on-hand for further direction and support as needed. Lunch will be provided at the conclusion, courtesy of REI!
This event is part of the Vermillion Stewards program, which helps local residents learn about the watershed while working to protect and enhance its unique natural resources.
